Aging in Place

Aging in Place

Much of our work today involves helping individuals and couples prepare their homes for aging in place. Some of these projects involve a major renovation; others involve only a small bit of tweaking; all are unique. What we have learned in this process is that aging in place involves a lot more than installing grab bars.

As we age we change in our physical, sensory and mental abilities. Our goal as architects is to make your home more accommodating of those changes while remaining a pleasant environment for all ages. In fact most of the changes – in balanced lighting, in clearances, in thermal comfort, in reachability—simply make the house a lot more pleasant and comfortable for anyone to live in.

We also realize that some things don’t change as we age: aesthetic sensibilities, connection to nature, the need for social interaction. It is these considerations that are often the drivers for wanting to remain in one’s home rather than moving—people want to live in a home, not a hospital. So maintaining and enhancing these attributes are guiding principles in all our projects.
