A Home in the Shenandoah Valley

This house is part of a family compound. Several houses and various out-buildings share a 176 acre ridge in Rockbridge County, Virginia, with spectacular views to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The owners wanted to upgrade the general level of quality and make the house more more comfortable and suited for aging in place. One of the owners has a health condition which requires very careful control of light and glare.

To achieve these goals we juggled and reconfigured all the major first floor living spaces. We added small and large porches on the exterior to control direct sun, both solving the glare problem and reducing summer heat gain.

Across the driveway we designed a small separate office to resemble a traditional dependency structure. A front porch with chamfered wood posts complements the simple stucco exterior.

All cabinetry was designed by us and custom fabricated. Carey Reid Kirk, of Annapolis, designed the interior finishes and furnishings. Albiston Associates, of Charlottesville was the landscape architect.

The house is heated and cooled by a geothermal heat pump system.
